Solid waste management is a very complicated system that includes many options for pre-treatment, recycling, treatment, and disposal to deal with various types of solid waste. In the early 21st century, we have focused on a part of the waste stream (such as packaging waste) or a specific disposal method (such as incineration or landfilling). To provide an optimal solution for sustainable development, we work on “integrated solid waste management”, which is an idea to find the most environmentally sound system considering all waste streams and all solid waste management systems together.
We perform research covering from waste separation to final disposal using both hardware (experiment, chemical analysis, and field investigation) and software (data analysis, modeling) tools. Life cycle assessment (LCA), employed in AWMA Lab, is a powerful tool for evaluating Solid Waste Management systems and assessing their environmental impacts.
